We’re building a tech hub in Berlin — join us for a delightful journey 🚀

Tech blog: cover, berlin tech hub

We’ve just opened our shiny, new Wolt office in one of the up-and-coming areas of Berlin, Friedrichshain. And we’re looking forward to hiring some more awesome people into the team to build Wolt together.

Since Wolt started in 2015 with ten restaurants in Helsinki, we’ve expanded to 23 countries, 250+ cities and millions of customers around the world order on our apps. We started our journey in Germany by launching a couple of neighborhoods in Berlin back in 2020, after preparing for the country for close to a year. In the under two years since, we’ve launched in ten cities and Germany is one of our key markets.

Before the pandemic, all of our product development was based at our HQ in Helsinki, Finland. What we learned, like many others, is that it’s possible to build great products and services also remotely. Now we give the option for anyone in Product Development to join us in either of our Berlin or Helsinki tech hubs, work fully remotely within Germany, Finland, Sweden, Denmark or Estonia, or a hybrid of these. We have exciting plans for our Berlin office this year, as we’re looking to at least double the headcount of our Berlin-based product development roles this year.

We’ve just opened many new interesting roles in Berlin within Product Management, Engineering, Data & Analytics and Design. Check them out on our careers site 👀

More than just food delivery — bringing the whole city to your fingertips

If you hear someone mention Wolt, you probably think of a blue app for food and grocery delivery. But behind the scenes we have a team of over 5000 people who work hard to make Wolt, well, Wolt for our customers and partners across 23 countries. 🌍

Wolt is not only a delivery app for restaurant food, groceries and other items. Our vision is to build a digital version of a mall in your pocket. The whole city at your fingertips. Delivered in about half an hour.

In practice this means building a logistics platform — a broad range of apps and technologies that work seamlessly together to provide a world-class experience for our customers and partners, as well as our internal teams.

This means a lot of interesting challenges from a product, technical and design perspective. And we’re working on some tough but interesting nuts to crack around things like…

  • Optimizing real-time logistics 📈. With hungry customers, busy restaurants, eager couriers, and the hectic world of retail, there are lots of interesting complex problems to solve. For example, there’s models for us to build to accurately predict and optimize our deliveries. Our teams are working on interesting problems to do with automating processes and optimizing logistics throughout the Wolt experience.

  • Expanding into new domains 🚀. We started with ten restaurants seven years ago, and have since grown to partner with tens of thousands of restaurant and retail partners. Expanding into retail and building our own dark stores (called Wolt Market), along with our future plans means there are loads of untapped, greenfield areas and domains to be built from scratch.

  • Providing a world-class customer experience for all our customers 💙.We’re known for providing a world-class customer experience, as our local support teams answer in-app messages from our customers and partners in under 2 minutes globally. And that’s real humans answering in the local language in any of our 23 countries. Our apps have the industry’s highest ratings  the App Store (4.8 global average as of March 2022) and Google Play (4.9 global average as of March 2022). As we scale, we’re working hard to provide our support team with the most efficient tools and to create a more customized experience for our customers. And much more.  Our ambition is to make Wolt a great experience not just for the customers who order through us but also for our restaurant retail and courier partners, as well as our teammates working at Wolt.

  • Building a mature and resilient platform 💪. To accommodate for the hyper-growth of serving  millions of customers across various markets and releasing new products, we’re putting a lot of focus on maturing our platform. We’re on a journey to move to a distributed systems design to increase our platform’s resilience, and this has some meaty projects to work on.

Multiple people

Our Product teams are built on ownership and trust 💙

Wolt’s over 35 product teams include 400+ talented engineers, designers, data scientists, product analysts, product leads and more (check out our tech blog!). We work in cross-functional, autonomous teams that are like mini startups within Wolt. Teams decide what they build and how they do it. This ranges end-to-end from teams prioritizing and executing their work, to choosing the tech they work with.

Our model is based on autonomy, ownership and accountability. We’ve removed the authority that comes with titles, spreading ownership to teams at every chance. Team members are trusted to make the right decisions as the experts in their area. Team leads are rather coaches that direct and help remove blockers rather than telling the team what to do. And while team members are empowered to own their work, this also comes with accountability to own your products and projects end-to-end.

Essentially this means teams > individuals. Trust > micro-management. Humility > ego.

Join us in our Berlin tech hub to build Wolt — work fully remotely, onsite or a hybrid of these. Your choice.

Our hybrid working setup allows our people in Product Development to work from anywhere in Germany, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, and Denmark, and we’re actively hiring talented people from wherever we find them. We have tech hubs in Berlin and Helsinki for closer collaboration, and outside them support a flexible remote working model from home.

The remote model started by as bit of surprise with the pandemic, but we think it’s here to stay in some shape and form. We like the hybrid model that allows for people to work remotely, with access to our wonderful offices, not to forget the importance of meeting people you work with face to face. We always aim for flexibility and the best support for our people at Wolt. After the world recovers from the pandemic, we’ll continue with this hybrid approach where you can choose mixing and matching a combination of remote and on-site work, based on your preferences.
