Life as a Sales Manager at Wolt: Meet Milica and Adam

AdamandMilica

At Wolt, we aim to make cities better places to live. We want to get the best restaurants and shops on our platform so that our customers can have almost everything delivered to them. Behind all this are our hard-working salespeople who are in charge of bringing new merchant partners to the Wolt platform. Their job is to ensure a great selection of restaurants and shops everywhere Wolt operates, making our customers’ everyday lives easier. They are the cornerstone of helping our merchant partners succeed, boosting local businesses to reach more customers and finding the best solutions for them.

But what does their daily life at Wolt look like? 👀 We sat down with two of our sales managers from team Austria, Milica Mitrović and Adam Huta, to find out more about their life at Wolt.

Hello 👋🏻 Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do at Wolt?

Milica: I'm Milica and I started working at Wolt in September 2023 as a sales manager in the field. Prior to this role, I have around 10 years of experience in sales and marketing from various companies and industries. As a sales manager, my main responsibility is to bring new restaurants to our platform to provide our customers with the best selection available in their area.

Adam: I’m Adam and likewise Milica, I also joined Wolt in September 2023. I also work as a sales manager in the field here in Austria. As a sales manager I’m helping local restaurants expand their reach and grow their businesses by connecting them with more customers.

Why did you decide to join Wolt?

Milica: I was approached by an expansion manager from Wolt who asked if I was interested in learning more about working in sales at Wolt. I was amazed by the way he represented everything about Wolt’s ways of working and business. The opportunity to visit restaurants and help them reach more customers felt tempting - I could be out there in the field and constantly meet new people. It felt like a perfect match to me.

Adam: A talent acquisition partner from Wolt connected with me on Linkedin. Although I had never ordered through Wolt before, I knew about its plans to enter the challenging Austrian market. I got curious and downloaded the Wolt app and placed an order. The user experience in the application was extraordinary, especially the features that allowed me to track the progress of my order and estimate the delivery time. With my almost 10 years background in sales and my education in gastronomy, Wolt seemed like the perfect fit for my skills and interests. The hiring process was efficient and engaging, and I was impressed by everyone I met. After talking to my possible future lead it was a no-brainer to join the team!

What does your team do here at Wolt?

Adam: I work in our restaurant sales department here in Austria, which consists of sales associates, specialists and managers with varying responsibilities. While associates reach out to potential restaurant partners from the office, our specialists and managers are out on the road, meeting with potential customers, pitching our services and bringing them onboard with the Wolt app. With two teams dedicated to building restaurant partnerships and one focused on retail partnerships, we thrive on collaboration.

Milica: I’m part of the other restaurant sales team. I joined Wolt as a sales manager last year and moved into our expansion sales team in January 2024. The expansion sales team role is to enter new cities and to build Wolt’s foothold in them. Right now, I'm in Graz, working together with my team to bring more great restaurants into the Wolt app in the city and its surrounding neighborhoods. It’s exciting to see the concrete impact of our work when we get more cities launched and more restaurants onboarded!

What does your typical day look like?

Milica: I usually start my day around 8 AM and quite soon after that I have a quick video call with my team. We start by checking on how everyone's doing, and making sure everyone has the support they need. Then we dive into what's happening in our daily work and around the office. Sometimes it's a short two-minute catch-up, and other times it turns into a good half-hour chat.

In field sales, there is a lot of flexibility in how to organize my work, which is one of the most appealing aspects of this role. My mornings typically involve checking emails, making phone calls, and updating our customer relationship management system with notes from the previous day. Every day is different, and it all depends on my schedule. While there is considerable freedom and flexibility, it's important to consider the operating hours of the restaurants. This role rarely spans from 8 AM to 4 PM, as some restaurants open later, requiring evening visits. Personally, I find it perfect that my days vary, allowing me to organize my schedule in a way that suits me best.

Adam: Typically, my day starts at 9 AM with a morning meeting with my team and a cup of coffee, of course! Then, I enjoy some breakfast and prepare myself for the day ahead. This might involve making calls to potential restaurant partners, setting up meetings, planning my route for the next restaurant partner visits , or doing partner related paperwork. Around 1 PM, I start hitting up restaurants in the neighborhoods: I walk around the neighborhoods visiting restaurant owners and enjoy the fresh air while at it. I'm more of an afternoon and evening person, and the later, the better for me. But I've got colleagues like Milica who love those early mornings. This role gives us a lot of freedom: we set our goals, find our rhythm, and figure out how to make it work. That’s what I absolutely appreciate in this role.

Where do you typically work?

Milica: My job doesn't keep me in one location - I work everywhere. Usually, in the mornings and late afternoons, I work on my laptop at home. When it's lunchtime and restaurant owners and decision-makers are usually busy, it's best to use this break for yourself to enjoy a cup of coffee or have lunch. Sales managers in the field are rarely seen at the office as we spend most of our time on the road meeting customers.

Adam: Once a week, typically on Mondays, I'm at the office. It's a day when I have my weekly meetings with my team lead, but it's also a day of preparation and planning. Depending on the week, I may also start selling after lunch on Mondays. From Tuesday to Thursday, I'm mostly on the road meeting potential customers and dedicating my mornings to preparing for those important meetings at the home office.

What is the best part of working as a sales manager?

Milica: After working in sales for over a decade, both in the office and in the field, I can definitely say that field sales is one of the most dynamic and creative departments. Meeting new people continuously is truly inspiring. Finding new opportunities and building new partnerships is incredibly fulfilling. This role offers a lot of variety to act and react to diverse situations while paying close attention to details. I love the flexibility to organize my days in ways that suit me the best.

Adam: I love the freedom, positivity, and appreciation of being a sales manager. With freedom, I agree with Milica; I enjoy organizing my days in a way that suits me. This work environment is very positive, and I have a supportive team around me to share the best tips and tricks to become better in sales. So far, I haven’t had a single day when I woke up and thought, “I don’t want to do this today.” Nothing is more beautiful than waking up in the morning and being excited about what the day will bring you today. I also like the nature of sales, which requires persistence. Sometimes, I have days when I meet plenty of restaurant partners, and I don’t sell anything, and the other day around, I have three meetings, and I close all those deals. It depends, and actually, the day with several meetings and no sales was successful as well because I started many conversations that I might close in the future.

What makes you proud of your work?

Milica: I feel so proud to see the merchant partners I spoke with about Wolt live on the Wolt app. It's really satisfying to know that my efforts have paid off and that they are happy with our services, which are helping them reach a wider customer base. I genuinely enjoy working with people and I get really excited about being able to support restaurants in growing their businesses. I also love that our solution is easy to pitch, and our collaboration model is transparent and straightforward. There are no hidden details; instead, everything is simple and easy for restaurant partners to understand.

Adam: I am proud to sell a solution that is beneficial for many parties. It's a win for us, a win for our merchant partners to reach more customers, and a time-saver for our customers who can have their orders delivered in minutes. Wolt's environment is innovative, with the product continually evolving and offering new, unique features and solutions. For example, a recent new feature called Double Order allows customers to order from multiple venues with the same order. It's amazing to be able to provide new features to match customer needs!

How do you work with your team? Do you have some side activities as well?

Milica: On most Fridays, I go to the office to connect with my colleagues, which I consider very important. We also have the Wolt Austria all-hands session on Fridays, where important updates are shared. Once a month, we have TGIF (thank god it’s Friday-gathering), where we enjoy pizza and drinks together. Additionally, we have Wolt sports and team-building days to foster strong connections and have fun. Even though I interact with my team daily, my role as a sales manager is quite independent, so I value these opportunities to bond with my colleagues.

Adam: We regularly share knowledge and celebrate our achievements together and we meet others in our daily syncs. Typically, once a quarter, we host team events to have fun and bond. The evening usually starts with a dinner together, followed by activities such as bowling, visiting an interactive museum, or going to the Christmas market. Sometimes we end the evening at a bar. As Milica mentioned, we have TGIFs at the office about once a month, with delicious food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. These events provide great opportunities for us to spend quality time together and get to know each other better.

Last but not least: How would you describe Wolt’s working culture?

Milica: Here at Wolt people are really ambitious and they work with their heart. Actually, doing things with heart and treating each other kindly is even one of our values. I love the flatness and low hierarchy: it’s easy to approach people regardless of their job level and there is always help available when I need it. People are very committed and helpful. Everybody is not the same and there are so many different personalities and the team overall is multicultural. I feel that at Wolt, you can be yourself which matters the most!

Adam: I love how the environment here is so supportive - there's always someone ready to help out when you need it. The open and honest communication internally is great too. I think the people here are really smart and always looking to improve. In our challenging market, it's crucial to stay innovative and keep developing our products and solutions constantly.
