Wondering what it’s like to intern at a fast-moving tech company?

Meet Simona, an Applied Science Intern in Wolt’s Logistics Assignments team. She went from solving integrals for fun, to tackling real city-scale routing problems that keep Wolt’s deliveries running smoothly.

If you’re curious about life at Wolt, passionate about problem-solving, or dreaming of a career where you’ll learn by doing, let’s dive in.

“Wolt’s values of learning, humbleness, and taking ownership really spoke to me.”

Hi there 👋 I’m Simona.

My background is in Mathematics, but when I chose my studies, I wasn’t entirely sure where that would lead. Math was something I enjoyed so it felt like the right choice. I still look back nostalgically on the hours spent solving integrals while listening to movie soundtracks on repeat, and on those aha moments when something complex finally clicked.

Studying mathematics often felt less like “studying” and more like spending time solving interesting, challenging problems and stretching how I think. I wanted to do that kind of problem-solving in a more practical setting and that’s what pulled me to Wolt.

Wolt had always seemed like a really cool place to work. I liked the brand and the culture, but what really stood out were Wolt’s values of learning, humbleness, and taking ownership. When I moved to Sweden, one of Wolt’s tech hubs, Wolt naturally became my top choice.

Turning theory into real-world impact

Logistics Assignments is one of three logistics teams at Wolt, focused on delivery logistics from the courier partner’s perspective. Our team develops and maintains the routing optimizer, the system that solves the Vehicle Routing Problem.

In simpler terms: when there are X customer orders and Y courier partners across a city, our system figures out which courier should pick up and deliver which orders, and when, in order to be the most efficient.

At Wolt, I work in Applied Science and Operations Research, a field that sits at the intersection of data science, engineering, and applied mathematics. It’s where theoretical ideas turn into real solutions.

Projects vary from month to month and often span multiple domains. I’ve worked on:

  • experimentation projects (for example, testing what happens if the optimizer runs longer),

  • development projects implementing new system features, and

  • predictive modelling to estimate key metrics and improve performance.

Day to day, the work changes depending on the project. Some days are about exploring data or systems, others about designing algorithms or testing new ideas. There are also team meetings, learning sessions, and dedicated time to study new topics or methods.

“Even as an intern, you’re treated as an expert in your area.”

One thing that surprised me in a really positive way was the level of autonomy and ownership at Wolt.

Product teams are structured to move fast and work independently. Each team owns a specific part of the product and includes all the roles needed to succeed - engineers, data scientists, designers, and product leads. Teams act as stakeholders to one another, while product and team leads provide high-level direction and priorities.

In a way, it feels like each team is a small company working on a focused mission that contributes to Wolt’s bigger goals.

What I enjoy most is that you really have to think and learn to make a meaningful contribution - you can’t just mindlessly execute tasks. One of my favourite moments during the internship was starting a new project with no idea where to begin, then gradually figuring things out, until everything clicked. Those moments are incredibly rewarding and remind me that progress comes from persistence.

Not having an extensive academic background, I aimed to learn quickly and broaden my knowledge beyond the immediate work in order to understand complex and theoretical topics more easily.

The people at Wolt have made a huge difference. Everyone is incredibly knowledgeable, humble, positive, and great at communicating and collaborating. It’s easy to ask for help and learn something new every day. Even as an intern, you’re treated as an expert in your area, with teammates who are always ready to support and guide you.

I’m staying at Wolt because of the people, and because the opportunities to learn feel endless. The internship already showed me how much there is still to explore and grow into.

Is a Wolt internship right for you?

If you enjoy solving problems, challenging yourself, obsessing over learning new things, and prefer learning by doing, I’d say that an internship here is the right choice.

When I studied Mathematics, people often asked me, “But what are you going to do with it? Teach?” Now I have another answer: “I do Applied Science at Wolt.”

I didn’t realise how many exciting opportunities exist for mathematicians outside of academia or research. Applied Science, especially within Operations Research, can be a dream role for someone who wants to apply mathematical thinking to real-world problems.

If I could give one tip to new applicants, it would be this: focus on the technical assignment. Most Engineering and Applied Science internship applications at Wolt are primarily assignment-based. Spend the majority of your time perfecting it, aim to polish it to the highest standard, and only then focus on your CV, motivation letter, or LinkedIn profile.

Wolt offers countless opportunities to learn and grow. Sometimes the real challenge is finding time for them all. There are regular learning sessions across Applied Science and Engineering, knowledge-sharing events between teams, mentorship programs, and initiatives like our Logistics reading and journaling club. During the internship, we also had practical workshops on soft skills and communication, helping us grow beyond the technical side.
