This is how we (pay)roll – Meet our Payroll Specialist, Krisztina

Kriszti - cover image

Meet Krisztina, a Payroll Specialist based in Budapest who has found her happy place in Wolt because she has the chance to work with numbers (she’s a big Excel fan) and satisfy her inner detective by diving into data to find errors and inconsistencies. Just what you want from someone who ensures you get paid, right?

Now, you may be thinking to yourself that “payroll is payroll”, regardless of where you work. Krisztina is here to (politely) tell you to think again. At Wolt, you’re empowered to challenge the system and rethink processes. You can shadow other roles to learn how your job impacts others – and vice versa, which also opens up interesting career opportunities. Oh, and you’re also part of a company operating in 30+ countries and 1,000+ cities globally, and it’s still growing by leaps and bounds even though it already has over 14,000 employees. That’s a lot of payslips!

Let’s find out more about Krisztina and what the ingredients are for a successful Payroll Specialist. Wolt is hiring, so who knows – it could well be you!

Hello Krisztina 👋 Tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do at Wolt.

“Hi! I’m Kriszti, a Payroll Specialist and I’ve been with Wolt for around 1.5 years now. I’ve worked in payroll jobs for around four years in total. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, and before joining Wolt, I worked at companies including a small Hungarian consultancy, Varian Medical Systems (which was acquired by Siemens), and Accenture.

I’ve always loved numbers – I think that Excel is magic ✨ – so I thought that a career in payroll would be a great fit for me. It matches my personality; I enjoy the responsibility and being able to influence the behind-the-scenes to help our company operate smoothly”.

Who doesn’t love a good spreadsheet?! How did you find your way to Wolt?

“I was a regular user of the Wolt app as a customer, so I was already interested when contacted by a recruiter. The further I went in the hiring process, the more interested I became. The job description matched how I wanted to work, and there was an introductory video that showed how people in Wolt take responsibility and ownership. It really inspired me.

Often at work, it’s hard to stick with something when you know it could be done in a better, more efficient way. In my interviews, I learned that at Wolt, you’re encouraged to take ownership and make changes, and that’s been my exact experience at the company. You’re working with people who want to do the right thing. You brainstorm, share ideas, focus on solutions, and build great things together.”

So far, so good. But come on, isn’t payroll similar regardless of the company?

“At Wolt, the payroll team is focused on processing employee salaries accurately and on time. We’re also responsible, for example, for company contributions to be paid to the authorities. While the role may sound similar to how other payroll work is done, what’s different is how we do it at Wolt. We shape and build our processes here ourselves so that they make sense. It’s a great way to develop, learn, and work together. We’re always laser-focused on how our role impacts our customer (our teammates), so they get a great payroll experience and can focus on their day job!

What I enjoy the most is the ownership. I get to take ownership of processes and improvements I want to implement, and try out new things. If I want to create something from scratch, I can do it. I can focus on small parts of the payroll processes, and if the changes don’t work, I move on and try something different. Our team is very collaborative, and we learn from one another.

We’re encouraged to try things out, and if they fail, then we try something new. We’re focused on small improvements every day; in fact, we call it getting 1% better every day. In practice, this means sharing ideas and learning from each other.”

A great spirit of ownership and independence. Cool! What else sets Wolt Payroll apart?

“We’re very collaborative and want to understand how our work impacts the teams around us. In payroll, we’re in touch with many other teams, so we often do shadowing sessions with them to understand their teams, roles, and ways of working. It helps us to understand each other and build a deeper partnership together. If you’re interested to learn about another team and what they do, you can schedule sessions with them. It’s a great way to collaborate!

This collaborative atmosphere and partnerships that we’re building with teams around us make Wolt stand out from other companies for me. I’ve never experienced this much openness and genuine will to learn about how to work effectively together.”

Very interesting! So, what does a Payroll Specialist do on a day-to-day basis?

“Well, you never have the same day twice, there’s always something different happening, and you’re working with various parts of the payroll process. Sometimes you’re working with HR, or with payroll vendors to confirm the numbers. When the salaries are ready, you liaise with Treasury, and then with Finance after the salaries are paid. One day, I’m speaking with an HR specialist in Greece, and then with another specialist in Finland. We have a very global team, which makes work interesting!

During payroll processing, we download reports and work with HR to ensure that the data is correct and no salary changes are missing. We then send the reports to payroll vendors and answer their questions if they have any. Then we’re validating in Excel. Did I mention I love Excel? 😆When validating data, I’m always looking for something that could go wrong, which is an essential skill for this role. I’m always happy if I spot something! After validation, we work with Treasury and then Finance, and answer any questions they might have.”

Right, payroll at Wolt is different. Besides payroll, what’s the working culture like at Wolt?

“At Wolt, we communicate very openly. Communication, whether it comes from the leadership team or happens within the teams, is always very ‘human’. It’s very unique. Open, transparent communication makes you feel appreciated and motivated. And talking about communication, it’s of course true that with such a fast-growing company like ours there’s also stress and the job can be hectic at times. Luckily, we have great jokes and a strong emoji game in the team, and that really can lighten the mood! 😆

We have responsibility and flexibility. When it comes to how we do our job, we can work a hybrid of working from the office and at home. Our approach now is to have at least one day at the office per week, when we aim to have lunch together and spend time with each other. We can manage our time as we think works best. The company trusts us to do the right thing, and this is very inspiring.”

I’m sold! For those wanting to join the team, what makes a great Payroll Specialist for Wolt?

“You have to be someone who likes to be challenged. My team lead sometimes asks me why I do things a certain way, not because she wants me to do things differently, but because she wants to learn herself and perhaps suggest how to tackle the challenge in a better way.

You also have to be curious, because if you’re curious, you care about your job. You need to have a strong sense of ownership.

If you apply to work at Wolt, make sure to ask questions throughout the interview process. The clearer the picture you have about the role and the company, the easier it is to decide if you’re a good fit. Don’t panic. Enjoy yourself. I found the process to be more of a discussion than a traditional Q&A session. Our payroll team is constantly growing, and it’s an exciting time to join us!”
