It’s all under (Country) Control: Meet Margo, Regional Financial Controller at Wolt

Say hello to Margo, a finance expert with a deep sense of wanderlust. In three short (and fast) years she’s gone from a Country Controller for Hungary at Wolt to a Regional Financial Controller for nine countries. Given her passion and constant smiling, she seems to be really enjoying it, too!
Now, you may be thinking that a Country Controller is all about number crunching and spreadsheets, but Margo’s experience at Wolt shows that that description doesn’t begin to scratch the surface. You’re actually juggling multiple tasks with multiple stakeholders inside a fast-growing and dynamic company operating in 30+ countries, as well as with critical external parties like auditors and local authorities.
Wolt is now hiring Country Controllers, and Margo says the right candidate needs to show proactivity, curiosity and courage. Does that sound like you? If so, why don’t you dig into Margo’s story to see what could be in store for you?
Hello 👋 Tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do at Wolt!
“Hello, I’m Margo! I’m based in Budapest, although I’m originally from the western part of Hungary, near Lake Balaton. I share my life with my husband and our two dogs, and we’re both passionate about traveling.
I’ve been with Wolt for over three years now. I started as a Country Controller, responsible for overseeing Hungarian legal entities and with a primary focus on accounting, compliance and taxation. Today I’m a Regional Financial Controller responsible for nine countries. It’s been an enriching and challenging experience. I know this sounds like a cliché, but my first three years here have passed by super quickly!
Prior to Wolt, I was Head of Finance at a Hungarian company that operated restaurants and boutique hotels. The role gave me in-depth knowledge of the restaurant industry and its dynamics, which has allowed me to effectively support and handle inquiries from our merchant partners since joining Wolt.”
Congratulations on 3 years at Wolt! How did you get in, and how’s it been so far?
“I was eager to return to a dynamic, international environment that would both challenge and inspire me. Having already worked with Wolt from the merchant side, I saw the company’s impressive growth and innovative spirit firsthand. It was an easy decision to apply for a role there.
When I was selected, I felt confident it would be a natural fit given my background on the restaurant side and experience with Wolt. I have to admit that the role was far more complex than I initially expected, and the first months had a pretty steep learning curve! If I had to sum up my time at Wolt in a few words, they would be: freedom, trust, support and commitment.”
So, what does the Controlling team do at Wolt?
“We oversee the full accounting cycle across all supported countries — from monthly closings and financial statements to compliance and tax management. Our mission is to deliver fully reconciled, compliant financials that empower decision-making.
Simply put, we make sure the financial engine runs smoothly and in a compliant way so we’re ready for what’s next.”
What about Country Controllers?
“Country Controllers are key players in managing the full financial lifecycle of our local legal entities. They are responsible for accurate and timely month-end closings, preparation of annual financial statements and ensuring full compliance with local statutory and tax regulations — while staying aligned with Wolt’s global financial policies.
Collaboration here is key — we partner closely with auditors, regulators and all finance functions to keep operations smooth and our data reliable.”
I also heard that the Controller role at Wolt is quite strategic and has an interesting scope. Is that right?
“That’s right! The role goes well beyond accounting: Country Controllers play a vital role in supporting both local and global finance initiatives and actively drive process improvements. They also act as the primary finance point of contact for local teams.
At Wolt, Controllers collaborate closely with internal teams across General Ledger, Account Payable /Account Receivable, Revenue, Payroll and Tax. Country Controllers also act as primary points of contact for external stakeholders ranging from auditors to local authorities. We ensure clear communication and regulatory compliance, and that our business is well-understood from the outside in.
What really sets the role apart from what you find at other companies is the dual focus on local expertise and global integration — ensuring financial transparency, operational efficiency and strong governance at every level of the business.”
Yes, “global” and “fast-growing” are often found in the same sentence as “Wolt”.
“Right, that’s something I have seen since I joined. While I used to focus solely on one country as a Country Controller, today I work side-by-side with Controllers across the Central region, managing finance on a regional scale for nine countries: Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Czechia, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. It definitely keeps the work interesting!”
Whoa, that’s a lot! What does a typical day look like for a Country Controller?
“The short answer is that there is no “typical” day! While core responsibilities like month-end closings, reconciliations and VAT reporting provide a structured rhythm, every day brings something new. Regulatory updates, shifting business priorities and cross-functional challenges mean you must be prepared for anything.
Beyond the regular cycles, Country Controllers lead tax audits, manage statutory audits end-to-end and actively involved in new business initiatives from day one. They’re not just bookkeepers; they build the financial backbone to support growth and ensure full local compliance in a constantly evolving environment.”
“Not just bookkeepers”. Can you expand on that?
“Sure! Unlike in many companies, Wolt’s Country Controllers aren’t confined to the back office. We’re deeply embedded in the day-to-day operations of our local teams — the first point of contact for any finance-related question, and trusted partners in navigating local compliance, reporting and business decisions. Whether it’s tackling routine matters or solving unexpected challenges, we keep things running smoothly.
At the same time, we’re key players in the global finance organization, acting as the bridge between local execution and international strategy. This goes back to what I said earlier about the dual perspective — local depth and global reach — and it’s what sets the role apart, especially in a company operating in over 30 countries with some 15,000 employees and over 55 million registered users.”
So, what are the challenges, then? Any cool cases you’ve worked on?
“Well, balancing both worlds isn’t always easy. We deal with complex topics that often require careful thinking, so we need to stay sharp and collaborative, always aligning local needs with global standards.
While our goal is to harmonize processes across Wolt, the unique demands of certain regions can make it difficult to achieve consistent levels of efficiency. This often means that things move quickly and there’s a lot to do.
Another significant challenge is the sheer volume of transactions processed within our business. With 55+ million registered users, as well as 200,000+ active venues and 300,000+ courier partners partnered with us, we’re talking about huge amounts of transactions processed. Managing such high volumes effectively — while delivering timely and accurate data delivery for various purposes — requires constant focus and smart, efficient solutions.
That said, these challenges are also our greatest motivators, pushing us to develop smarter, more innovative approaches. Rewarding achievements for our team include successfully closing tax audits without any findings and completing the annual statutory audits smoothly. These milestones bring a strong sense of accomplishment and reflect the team’s dedication and professionalism.”
What’s the culture like at Wolt?
“It’s exceptional, and that’s because of the people who create it. Trust and support aren’t just words here — they’re core values that shape how we collaborate and grow.
The flexible work environment allows me to take full ownership of my responsibilities, allowing me to manage my time and approach in a way that maximizes my effectiveness. At Wolt, Country Controllers & Regional Controllers don’t just follow processes — we own them. From end-to-end accounting to full financial compliance, the responsibility is ours. That requires not only technical expertise, but also curiosity, creativity and the drive to constantly adapt as the business grows.
Beyond this, the role itself offers lots of learning and growth opportunities. Being part of a fast-moving team where challenges are seen as chances to innovate keeps me excited!”
This is very cool! Wolt is hiring Country Controllers – who should apply?
“Well, on one hand of course you need a strong professional foundation in accounting, taxation and compliance. But I believe that soft skills and mindset are equally, if not more, important. Proactivity, curiosity and courage will help you stand out from the crowd!
This role is primarily an individual contributor position. While there are recurring tasks with defined deadlines, much of the work involves tackling unforeseen challenges and adapting to change. You won’t get a detailed to-do list for tomorrow or next week, so being proactive is critical to ensuring smooth progress.
To succeed in this role you need to be curious and courageous. Wolt is a complex business so understanding what’s happening — and ensuring the financials accurately reflect the reality — requires a willingness to dig deeper, ask questions and continuously learn how different aspects of the business operate. There’s always something new to learn, and if you’re open to it, the learning curve is challenging and rewarding.
I always encourage new people to ask questions. Given the diversity and the complexity of the topics that we deal with day to day, it’s perfectly normal to not have the answers right away. Courage is also necessary to speak up when something isn’t working as it should or when there’s a better way to approach a task.”
